An alumnus of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Virginia, Dr. Roberts has Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. degrees. His academic career began at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute as an assistant professor of economics. Over the years, he held other academic positions at the University of New Mexico, Stanford University, and Georgetown University, where he was appointed to the Wm. E. Simon Chair in Political Economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He has authored twelve books, which have been translated into German, French, Chinese, Russian, Czech, Spanish, Korean, and Turkish. In 1981 President Reagan appointed him Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury for Economic Policy. In 1985 he founded the Institute for Political Economy and serves as Chairman. A prominent and lauded figure in his field, Dr. Roberts has earned many awards for his professional accomplishments. The US Treasury awarded him the Meritorious Service Award for “outstanding contributions to the formulation of US economic policy.” In 1987 at a ceremony in Washington the French government awarded him the Legion of Honor for his service to economics.
His career in journalism is equally distinguished. As associate editor of the Wall Street Journal, he was given his own column, Political Economy, on the editorial page. He was Business Week’s first outside columnist. He was columnist for the Scripps Howard News Service and for Creators Syndicate and for major European newspapers. In 2015 the Press Club of Mexico gave him the International Journalism Award.
In business he has served on the boards of ASchulman and the Value Line Investment Funds. For six years he served as president of the Inlet Beach Water Company.
